Dear Friends in Christ,
While the specific customs and observances of Lent have varied over time, the practice of maintaining a period of spiritual preparation before Easter goes back to at least the fourth century, and the scriptural foundations for this journey are clear.
Following in the tradition of Moses and Elijah, Jesus submitted himself to a 40-day time of prayer and fasting, where amid varied temptations and distractions, he showed us how to trust in God's sovereignty and provision.
We, too, can use this time ahead for study, reflection, and self-sacrifice, as we prepare ourselves in heart and mind for the joy of the resurrection. As so many worldly influences compete for our time, attention, and devotion, we can commit ourselves more intentionally to God as we seek His guidance and inspiration for our days.
You will find within the pages of this brochure many opportunities to enrich your life of faith and strengthen your relationship with our living Lord through this holy time and season. If you're looking for a Lenten book, I'lI be reading "Practicing the Way" by John Mark Comer, and I'd welcome some conversation partners!
Whatever disciplines you choose, I pray that God will bless you with new spiritual insights and growth, as you draw nearer to His saving, enlivening presence!
Faithfully yours,
Jody+
